600mm Watermain on Dundas Street (Highway 5)
Client: Regional Municipality of Halton
Location: Town of Oakville
Construction Value: $1,300,000
Services: Preliminary Design Report, Detailed Design, Contract Administration and Resident Inspection, Post-Construction Services
Key Features
- 2.1 km of 600 mm Ductile Iron pipe watermain on Dundas Street (Highway 5) from Neyagawa Boulevard to Sixth Line.
- A cost savings strategy of competitive bidding for alternative pipe materials led to the selection of DI pipe for this project instead of CPP, PVC or PE.
- “Jack and bore” tunneling was used for four environmentally sensitive creeks – Shannons Creek and Munns Creek – including two box culverts, to minimize the impact to the watercourses and riparian vegetation. This was accomplished using an oversized casing to reduce problems with cobbles and boulders in the native soils.
Halton Region’s Water Master Plan identified the Dundas Street (Highway 5) feedermain as a priority project to serve the planned growth in north Oakville.
With this section of Dundas Street under MTO jurisdiction as part of the Highway 5 corridor, CFA carried out extensive liaison and negotiations on the Region’s behalf in order to secure MTO approval.
The Preliminary Design phase included the evaluation of alternative alignments along the road corridor, pipe materials, construction methods (e.g. tunnel vs open cut etc.) as well as potential impacts and mitigative measures.
Extensive liaison with stakeholder groups and regulatory agencies was required for permits and approvals comprising HRCA for the creek crossings, MOE for dewatering, utility companies for relocations (Hydro) and gas pipeline and bell crossings.
Effective traffic management and construction staging was critical to minimize disruption along Dundas Street.
